Counsel failed to produce written instructions, detailed breakdowns or records to justify substantial fee notes and provided no explanation; the claimed fees were unjustifiable, disproportionate and unsupported, therefore the court taxed counsel's fees down by 85%, allowed HK$130,000 in total for the three bills, and made an Order nisi (which became absolute) that counsel shall not charge lay clients more than the taxed amount and must repay any surplus.
