The High Court held the Magistrate's sentencing exercise was correct in principle and not manifestly excessive: the bogus marriage scheme and multiple false representations were sufficiently serious given prevalence and deterrence objectives, justifying the Magistrate's starting points and the imposition of a 12-month sentence for counts 1–6 and a consecutive 9-month sentence for the 7th count for a total of 21 months imprisonment; the appeal was dismissed.
