Under English and Hong Kong law provocation can only reduce murder to manslaughter by reference to characteristics of the accused if the provocative words or acts are directed at that characteristic; a mental condition that lessens self-control cannot be relied upon for provocation where the provocation is unconnected with that condition; distinctions between s.3 diminished responsibility and s.4 provocation must be maintained.
