Section 67A(1A) requires both a connection between the period of custody and the offence and that the custody be immediately prior to first appearance; the challenged detention periods were remote or unconnected and some had already been accounted for in earlier sentences, so the Magistrate properly declined further deduction; while courts have residual discretion to award credit outside s67A, that discretion must be exercised judicially and with full information to avoid double‑counting.
