Although the judge correctly identified significant aggravating features (premeditation, drugging, prolonged sexual indignities and failure to use a condom), the 12‑year starting point for rape was manifestly excessive in all the circumstances; a sentence of 10 years adequately reflected the gravity of the offence and was substituted by the Court of Appeal.
