Section 16(1) is confined to false statements attacking a candidate's personal honour, veracity or private morality; statements criticizing a candidate's public contribution do not fall within s.16(1). Accordingly convictions under s.16(1) (charges A and B) were quashed. Separately, evidence was sufficient to prove the appellant caused the printing, distribution and failure to deposit election leaflets in breach of s.19(1) and s.19(2), so convictions on charges C, D and E were upheld.
