The convictions were quashed because the trial judge erred in admitting the contested statements: he failed to resolve significant conflicts in prosecution witnesses' accounts, failed to properly evaluate defence evidence (including solicitor's evidence and contemporaneous notes), and allowed extraneous adverse impressions of the accused to influence credibility assessment; because the prosecution case depended on those statements the verdict was unsafe.
