A conviction under section 17(1) requires that the deceiver intends to permanently deprive the victim of the whole of the victim's interest; obtaining a leasehold interest shorter than the victim's continuing interest does not satisfy that requirement and therefore, on the admitted facts, no offence was disclosed, permitting the appellate court to quash convictions entered after guilty pleas.
