The application for an appeal aid certificate was refused because none of the applicant's complaints amount to reasonably arguable grounds of appeal: documentary records support the criminal record, trial counsel and the judge conducted the trial fairly, and any translation errors were immaterial to the jury's assessment and did not render the trial unfair.

Leave to appeal was granted on the ground of substantial and grave injustice because it was reasonably arguable that the trial judge's summing-up relied on mistranslated portions of the applicant's interview in a way that may have deprived the applicant of a fair trial.

The Court held the trial judge's credibility determinations and findings that the applicant acted dishonestly in helping to realise stolen goods were open to the judge on the evidence; alleged mistranslations and other grounds did not undermine the thrust of the telephone negotiations or the convictions, therefore the application for leave to appeal was refused and convictions upheld.
