The Court concluded there was a lurking doubt arising from fundamental, irreconcilable contradictions between the police post‑recorded/teleprinter statements and their oral evidence, compounded by an unexplained 4.5‑month delay in charging and insufficient jury direction regarding those contradictions; accordingly the conviction was unsafe and was quashed.
