The appellate court found the fireworks conviction depended significantly on an inculpatory statement (P9) whose reliability was undermined by inconsistencies and therefore quashed that conviction and set aside its sentence; by contrast the convictions for retention/theft of warrant cards were upheld because they rested on independent agreed facts and the magistrate was entitled to disbelieve the appellant's explanations; the magistrate's omission to state expressly the appellant's good character was not fatal given admissions on the record and context showing the matter was considered.
