Because counsel charged large fees (HK$870,000) without providing written instructions, contemporaneous records or any explanation, the court found the charges unjustified and unreasonable and therefore taxed down and off 85% of the claimed fees, allowed HK$130,000 in total, and made an order nisi (now absolute) restricting counsel from charging lay clients more than the taxed amount and directing repayment of any surplus.
