Because the magistrate failed to ascertain the appellant's means before ordering restitution and imprisonment in default, the restitution order and default imprisonment were set aside; applying the principle of totality the appellate court reconfigured sentences (concurrent for same transactions, consecutive for separate transactions) and reduced the aggregate punishment to two years' imprisonment.
