Imposing consecutive sentences in separate charge sheets before the same Magistracy without consolidation or transfer, producing an aggregate exceeding the s.57 statutory maximum for a permanent magistrate, was wrong in principle; appellate adjustment was required and the drug offence sentences were ordered concurrent and only consecutive to the earlier 18 month sentence to comply with s.57, reducing the aggregate to three years.
