The conviction was quashed because official Registration of Persons records demonstrated that the identity card reproduced in Exhibit P1 was genuine and bore the photograph of the card applicant, thereby undermining the magistrate's finding of forgery and leaving the prosecution unable to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the appellant had used a forged identity card; residual doubt also precluded entry of a substitute conviction.
