The Court found the original sentences manifestly inadequate and wrong in principle because the trial Judge adopted starting points that were too low and gave excessive weight to mitigation (following orders and good character). The Court adopted a 6-year starting point for these respondents, treated their culpability as substantially similar, limited discounts for R1 and R2 but awarded a substantial discount to R3 for his guilty plea and assistance, and substituted custodial sentences of 5 years (R1), 4 years (R2) and 2 years (R3).
