Custody was awarded to the father because the court found, on the balance of evidence including social work and psychological reports and the children’s expressed preferences, that the father provided superior emotional understanding and stable parenting; the mother’s past behaviour and mental health episodes had materially disrupted the children’s welfare and schooling and therefore continued custody with the mother was not in the children’s best interests.
