Given the way the defence itself pursued a "set‑up" case and elicited the evidence about police acting on information and a target person, that evidence was admissible to explain police conduct and was central to the defence; the judge's directions in the summing‑up made clear that such information was not evidence of guilt and could be considered in assessing the defence allegation of a frame‑up, and therefore no miscarriage of justice arose and the conviction was safe.
