Both the Deed of Guarantee and the Deed of Indemnity are bonds under Head 14(1) because each instrument itself discloses a maximum ceiling of liability ($43,217,539.40) which is ascertainable from the instrument and therefore chargeable with ad valorem stamp duty on that maximum; contingent or conditional payment does not prevent characterization as a bond for stamp purposes and the indemnity is capped by the guarantee.
