The magistrate's chosen starting point of 18 months for handling stolen goods, reduced by one-third for the guilty plea, was within the proper exercise of sentencing discretion given the facts and the appellant's extensive criminal record; therefore the 12‑month sentence was not manifestly excessive and the appeal must be dismissed.

Conviction for unlawful possession was upheld because there was ample evidence and the charge was read and explained; however the sentences for the three offences of giving false information to a pawnbroker were manifestly excessive and were reduced from four months each to two weeks each, to be served consecutively and consecutive to the three month unlawful possession sentence.

Appeal allowed in part: where offences arose from the same transaction the sentences should be concurrent; substituted sentences were imposed reducing total custodial term to 24 months and the court ordered 21 days to pay $2,000 compensation failing which 6 months' imprisonment consecutive to the 24 months.
