Because the record was ambiguous as to whether the unrepresented appellant was informed of his right to call witnesses and there was a clear indication that material witnesses might have existed, convictions for blackmail could not be safely upheld and must be quashed with retrial ordered; by contrast the confessional statement as to professing membership was admissible and properly considered, so that conviction on the Triad charge stands.
