The trial magistrate was in the best position to assess witness credibility and properly accepted the store detective's evidence over the appellant's account; therefore the conviction was upheld; however the original fine of $3,000 was disproportionate to the low-value theft and the appellant's circumstances, so the court reduced the fine to $500.
