Given the applicant's severe but transient mental impairment (acute adjustment disorder), the use of a deliberately small quantity of sulphuric acid, the applicant's self-injury and the victim's expressed remorse and plea for leniency, the Court found the trial judge's 10-year starting point and 5 years 6 months sentence excessive; the Court set a 5-year starting point, applied a one-third discount for guilty plea to 40 months and further mitigation to arrive at a substituted sentence of 2 years' imprisonment.
