Section 30(1) of Cap.117 imposed a statutory duty on the parties to the sale, sub-sale and second sub-sale agreements to make and stamp contract notes, creating ad valorem liability before the ultimate conveyance; section 36(4) does not relieve those duties in respect of shares because the context and separate statutory machinery of Cap.117 demonstrate a contrary legislative intention that the s.36(4) relief does not extend to dealings in shares, therefore stamp duty is payable on the intermediate agreements.
