The Court held the identification evidence was of such poor quality and demonstrably unreliable (fleeting glances, poor lighting, inconsistencies at identification parades) that the trial judge ought to have withdrawn the case from the jury; reliance on speculative mutual support between two unreliable identifications was unsafe, and accordingly the conviction was quashed and sentence set aside.
