The combination of procedural irregularities—improper prosecution reply against an unrepresented defendant, failure to conduct a necessary voir dire on voluntariness of the police interview, inadequate judicial assistance to the unrepresented defendant on closing speech and on consequences of admitting agreed facts, and incomplete jury direction on the significance of absent DNA—rendered the convictions unsafe; accordingly the Court quashed the convictions and ordered a retrial.
