Threatening to give incriminating evidence unless paid is blackmail and offering or soliciting payment to withhold or alter evidence is an attempt to pervert the course of public justice, and in both offences the truth or falsity of the underlying incriminating evidence is immaterial; the defendant's conduct on 5, 6 and 7 February 1991 satisfied these offences and conviction was warranted.
