Expert evidence established the seized notes were counterfeit; accused exercised control over the vehicle and led police to the bag, surrendered the keys and identified the location of the notes, and his conduct plus demands to 'clean' the money and demonstration in the hotel provided sufficient evidence of knowledge and intent. Defence was an afterthought and a bare denial, failing to raise reasonable doubt. Accordingly elements of s.489C were proved beyond reasonable doubt and conviction follows.

Although prosecution established seizure, classification, valuation and an unbroken chain of custody, it failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that both accused had knowledge and the requisite joint intent to evade the import prohibition; the defence raised a credible reasonable doubt (transport-for-hire explanation, owner SD4 admitted placing goods), therefore accused are acquitted and discharged.
