An 8-year starting point was appropriate given a single but violent fatal assault on a vulnerable infant by his caregiver combined with deliberate concealment and misleading medical staff and police; that starting point was reduced for time on EM bail (10 months) and a 10% discount for the offender's adverse cultural and personal background, producing a final term of six years and five months; a minimum period under s86 was not required because the offending was a one-off incident and the sentence itself adequately addressed accountability, denunciation, deterrence and protection.
