Section 7(4) must be read to exclude personal injury that is related to non-physical stress such that physical sequelae mediated principally by non-physical (mental/emotional) stress do not qualify as gradual process injury; however, on the facts the appellant's cannabis dependence acquired in the undercover deployment constituted a physical gradual process injury and the appeal is allowed only to that extent.
