Although there was no direct evidence of the defendant personally handling or causing the signing of the cheques, the totality of the evidence (roles and duties, pattern of cheque signing and coding, specific miscoding, temporal correlation with change in signing practice and reconstructed accounts) provided a sufficient evidential basis from which a properly directed jury could reasonably conclude the defendant directly or indirectly used the cheques dishonestly; therefore the s147 discharge application was dismissed.
