On the balance of the medical evidence the appellant's present condition of multilevel degenerative disc disease with spinal stenosis is not causally connected to the single lifting/back strain event of 29 December 1993; accordingly ACC was correct to cease entitlements and the appeal is dismissed.

The appellant failed to prove on the balance of probabilities that her present back condition is causally connected to any covered accident; medical evidence established the condition is attributable to symptomatic degenerative disc disease excluded by section 10, therefore the respondent rightly ceased entitlements under section 73(1).

The 1993 accident only precipitated or accelerated an inevitable degenerative process caused by childhood osteomyelitis and osteoarthritis; the substantial cause of the appellant's present disability is the pre-existing condition and not the original contusion, therefore cover is excluded under s10 and the cancellation of entitlements was correctly affirmed.
