On the balance of probabilities the defendant was suffering from schizophrenia (a disease of the mind) at the time of the offence; he understood the nature and quality of his acts but, due to overwhelming psychotic delusions and hallucinations, did not know that killing the victim was morally wrong; accordingly the Judge recorded a finding of not guilty by reason of insanity under s 20(2) CP(MIPA) Act 2003.
