Extension of time to appeal was granted and the appeal was dismissed because the appellant's extensive and violent pattern of child sexual offending, high/very high assessed risk of re-offending, prior lengthy custodial sentences and failure of rehabilitative measures meant a determinate sentence would not adequately protect the community; preventive detention with a five year minimum period of imprisonment was therefore the only appropriate and not manifestly excessive sentence.
