The sentencing judge erred in principle by giving only a one-eighth credit for the guilty plea; having regard to the fact that the plea spared the victims the ordeal of testifying and the authorities encouraging generous discounts in such cases, an additional year discount was appropriate, reducing the effective sentence from an 8 year starting point to 6 years; the Court therefore allowed the appeal and substituted a 6 year sentence for the rape conviction.
