The judge's adverse credibility finding, supported by the surrounding circumstances (large and unusual quantity of coupons, clandestine instructions, inconsistencies in the defendant's account and additional coupons in his vehicle), justified an inference that the applicant knew or believed the coupons were false; accordingly the convictions and the sentence imposed were proper and not excessive.
