The appeal is dismissed. The registrar was correct to refuse the proposed amendments (paras 10A–10C) because a defendant's plea of justification must relate to the defamatory meaning pleaded by the claimant; pleading a Lucas-Box meaning based solely on the defendant's version of events that the claimant does not rely on is irrelevant and unnecessary. The proper cure was to delete the Lucas-Box reference from para 8A(d) as proposed by the plaintiff.
