The Court held that the pre-confession questions and admissions of prior lies were admissible as explanatory evidence necessary to understand how the confessional statement came to be made; the evidence was not so prejudicial as to require exclusion given the trial judge's clear directions and the established voluntariness of the confession, and therefore the conviction and eight-year sentence were upheld.
