The trial judge's discouragement/refusal to allow cross-examination on the respondent's financial means, when those means were material to fixing maintenance, deprived the applicant of a fair opportunity to test the evidence; accordingly the proper remedy is to remit the matter for retrial so the issues can be resolved with cross-examination and any necessary discovery.
