The appeal was allowed and the conviction set aside because the trial judge's direction on inferential reasoning was unbalanced: he addressed only the prosecution's reasons for drawing inferences and omitted the defence's counter‑arguments, rendering the conviction unsafe; in the absence of strong countervailing factors the interests of justice required a retrial which was ordered.
