The Court of Appeal held the article was defamatory under the repetition rule because Ming Pao reproduced and reported Ma's allegations without sufficiently negating them such that a reasonable reader could understand the publication as repeating the imputations; however the trial judge's awards were excessive and were reduced — 1st Plaintiff general damages reduced to HKD 50,000; 2nd Plaintiff general damages reduced to HKD 150,000; aggravated damages not awarded on appeal. The defendants were granted costs of the appeal nisi.
