The court found the husband was genuinely unemployed for the relevant period and had no assets beyond disclosed means but was now able to resume payments; fairness required that neither party be fully penalised for circumstances beyond their control so half of the outstanding maintenance arrears (ZAR1,854,600 at end of March 2016) was remitted. Therefore the husband remains liable for ZAR927,300 (approximately US$57,730 or GBP40,910).
