The Court of Appeal held that the trial court and High Court correctly found the defence produced an innocent explanation sufficient to rebut the s50(1) presumption on the balance of probabilities and that the prosecution failed to prove the elements of corruption and money‑laundering beyond reasonable doubt. Material non-production of business documents and credible defence witnesses created reasonable doubt. There were no compelling grounds to disturb the factual findings; appeal dismissed and acquittal upheld.

The Court found serious and material gaps in the chain of evidence regarding the trap money (conflicting account of denominations, lack of identification/seal on envelope, failure of key trap witness SP5 to identify exhibits in court) and significant concerns about reliance on interested witnesses without adequate corroboration; coupled with failure to prove solicitation and corrupt purpose beyond reasonable doubt, these defects entitled the accused to benefit of doubt and required quashing of conviction and release.
