The trial judge's direction that lies 'would be evidence going to proof of' guilt was a misdirection, but given the jury's acceptance that the defendant's innocent explanation was a lie, the presence of inculpatory statements and clear forensic evidence of deliberate arson, the misdirection did not render the convictions unsafe; leave to appeal was granted but the appeal dismissed and convictions affirmed.
