Life imprisonment is mandatory for murder; having weighed aggravating factors (victim vulnerability, violation of home, use of a weapon, extreme repeated blows, post-offence callousness and serious harm to family) and mitigation (guilty plea, personal background and remorse), the appropriate starting point for the minimum non-parole period was 14.5 years, reduced by one year for the guilty plea and a further six months for personal mitigation, yielding a 13-year non-parole period.
